We had our first frost of the autumn this morning. The temperature was 29 when I got up, although it quickly rose into the 30s one the sun came up. Steve turned the furnace on for the first time this morning. There is nothing like the smell of the accumulated dust in the heating elements being incinerated to proclaim that air conditioning season is over.
The coming of frost has always seemed to me like natures way of putting a period on the growing season, a reminder that cold weather is coming and that the earth will be taking a rest. A reminder to get ready for the cold and dark of winter by filling the pantry with a supply of carbs. (And I’ve been craving carbs like crazy. I have to be careful not to gain a lot of weight in the winter. I’d sit and eat carb filled comfort food until April if I could.)
This time of year, I start making plans to give the house a good cleaning before sealing it up for the winter. I like to start winter with a clean house, makes it easier to keep up with over the holidays and into late winter when it’s not possible to open up the windows and let in fresh air.
